Model Rocket Motors

If you have a passion for rocketry or if you like to see your rocket soaring in the sky defying the gravitation of the Earth, it is imperative for you to learn some of the basic facts about model rocket motor. Watching a model rocket taking off the ground is really a fascinating thing but knowing the science and the mechanics behind this captivating scenario will definitely make it far more enjoyable experience for you. So lets start learning some common facts about model rocket engines:

Elements of Model Rocket Engines

In most of the cases, single used engines are integrated in those model rockets, which use nozzles made of lightweight ceramic and cardboard bodies. Using lightweight materials helps a rocket to do away with unnecessary weight, which often acts as an obstacle. You are not authorized to any motor you want in your model rocket. You have to make sure the fact the engine that you are going to integrate in your model rocket is certified and te
sted either by the Canadian Association of Rocketry, the Tripoli Rocketry Association or the National Association of Rocketry. Certified engine ensures safety that you should not discard at any cost. Model rocket engine motors can be broadly divided into two sections: F blackpowders motors and Blackpowder motors.

Black Powder Motor Engine
As black powder is very brittle in nature, you need to remain aware of all its minute aspects otherwise; you might have to face an untoward incident in near future. If you are using large black powder motor in your model rocket, you should never expose this motor to direct heat otherwise; it might develop hairline fractures in its body, which can have serious repercussion. Hairline fractures will increase propellant’s surface area in due course of time, which can quicken the ignition process of the motor and thereby increasing the pressure in the engine’s internal chamber. If the pressure becomes unbearable or if the pressures exceeds the strength of paper case, it can tear apart the internal chamber of the motor engine and thereby causing massive explosion. The rocket might get partially damaged or it can be destroyed entirely.

Powerful Model Rocket Engine
The body of a powerful model rocket engine should be made of hard plastic as its propellants will be made of aluminium powder, potassium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate etc. The nature of this kind of propellant is more or less similar to that of used in space shuttle and therefore, it is not as brittle as black powder. This type of propellant is more powerful and it has the capacity to withstand rough condition.

Reloadable Composite-Propellant Motors

If you are concerned about the cost, you need to opt for reloadable composite-propellant motors. More often than not, these types of motors are used for commercial purpose. The major advantage of this model rocket engine is that you can reuse and reload it as long as it is in good condition.

Model Rocket Recovery Part II

In the previous section, we have discussed some of the common and widely employed model rocket recovery methods that have proved effective enough to recover model rocket after being launched successfully. The main purpose of recovering a model rocket is to use it for launching again and thereby saving a good amount of bucks that can be saved for other purpose. Here in this section, we will discuss some other model rocket recovery techniques as well. So just check them out now:

Helicopter recovery
In this model rocket recovery method, helicopter-style blades are employed for bringing back model rockets safely to earth. Recoiling model rocket engine in this helicopter recovery method creates a pressure and this pressure forces the rocket cone to pop out. A number of rubber bands are being used for connecting nose cone and blades of a model rocket which pulls the blades for helping the model rocket to enjoy a safe landing.

Parachute Recovery
This is another widely used and the most simple model rocket recovery technique. Though it is ideal for small rockets, it can be used for recovering large rockets. Motor’s ejection charger is used in this method for pushing out parachute when needed. In most of the cases, a fireproof material is inserted into the body of the rocket engine and this enable the ejection charge to continue its work without damaging any equipment. When the parachute is unfolded, it helps the rocket to land on earth smoothly.

Glide recovery
In this recovery method, motor should be separated from the glider or an airfoil should be deployed for smoothening the functionality of the ejection charge. It will help you to ensure safe return of your rocket by using a spiral glide.

Model rocket: Some Recovery Methods

If rocketry is your passion, you have to do everything possible for making it a secure thing. The best thing you can do in this regard is to learn some basics about model rocket recovery plan. This will definitely help you to beef up security measures and to ensure the repeated launched of your model rocket. However there are a number of methods available for example streamer and parachute, you can try and taste some other as well. Some common recovery methods are enumerated here with ample information:

Tumble recovery
This recovery method is perfect for small rockets or for those rockets that have large cross-sectional area in them. By applying this method, you will be able to tumble the rocket back to earth. Tumble rocket should not be applied to those rockets that enter a ballistic trajectory.

Featherweight recovery
This method is absolutely perfect for small sized rocket. It allows a rocket to head towards earth safely. There is a slight difference between tumble recovery and featherweight recovery. In tumble recovery rocket is destabilized for preventing it from entering into the trajectory of ballistic missile.

Nose-blow recovery
This is a simple recovery technique. This method was widely used previously specifically in the mid 50th. In this recovery method, aerodynamic profile of model rocket is destroyed for reducing its speed and dragging it for ensuring smooth landing.

This is also an educational activity that can teach you a lot of things about how the entire thing works. However, you need to take some precautions before launching a model rocket. Here are the steps that you should always follow at any cost:
  • First find a location, which is not densely populated.
  • Make sure there are no trees, obstructions, and power lines in and around the location.
  • Put your safety cap before you begin to launch a rocket.
  • The launch pad should be located at the center of the field.
  • Use only government recommended rocket engine, which will help you to avoid any untoward incidents.
  • Use plug with the rocket nozzle.
  • Ignitor should be placed in Rocket’s nozzle.
  • Before ignition start, you have to remove the launch rod safety cap.
  • Keep the spectators away from the launching pad as far as possible.
  • You should not approach the rocket if it does not start instantaneously with the pressing of the button. Wait at least 60 seconds.

Finding a Place to Launch Rockets

Rocket launch is not matter that can be done precariously. You have to take every possible precaution possible for making it a safe thing. Finding out a rocket launch site is the most difficult task. Though launching a model rocket usually does not involve any dangerous consequences, the proposed site should be located in a remote place where there is no human habitation. This will ensure safety of the entire operation. As launching a model rocket is certainly a delightful experience, you will certainly not want that an accident spoil it. This is the reason why some people advise to take necessary precautions.

If you are living in a densely populated place then you might have to face extreme amount of difficulty while finding a suitable place to launch your rocket. But you should not go crazy and take a decision in haste. You can be a member of a forum where rocket enthusiastic people congregate from all over the world. You can precipitate in discussion for gathering more information about rocket launch.

Rocket Solid fuel

A solid fuel rocket is a rocket that gets it power from solid propellants. Though the ingredients of solid fuel of model rocket are starkly different from the ingredients used in making solid fuel for space rocket, there is some basic resemblance in them. The resemblance is that the purpose of both the fuels to help a rocket to fly or to provide a continuous source of energy. In the past solid fuel was formed by using gunpowder but things have changed starkly since then. Solid fuel is no longer used in space rocket as they are associated a number of hazards. However, rocket solid fuel is now widely used in model rockets as they offer a number of benefits to the users.

One of the major advantages of rocket solid fuel is that they can be stored for a long period of time as compared to liquid fuel. Furthermore, they are famed for their reliability and simplicity. How to make a rocket

Everyone cherishes an ambition of doing something out of the box, something unique. People love to fantasize about traveling in far of lands, voyaging in remote part of the sea, flying in the sky. However, these are all fantasies. However, if you really want to do something concrete, something that you can actualize. You will not have to have to take any drastic decision. Just learn about how to make a rocket that will be sufficient for you to materialize your dream. You have to gather some rocket parts before start building a rocket:
  • Glue
  • Pieces of Cardboards for preparing rocket fins
  • Model rocket engine
  • A tube
If you are planning for a large rocket, you have to opt for a large tube. A large sized rocket can decrease maximum altitude but it can increase stability of your rocket substantially. Furthermore, larger rockets also need larger fins. After cutting a tube to the required length, you have to clean its ends with much care. After that, you have to prepare the fins of your rocket. Cardboard can be used for this purpose as it is strong and at the same time thin. Fins should be one third of the total length of the rocket.

Apply glue on the fins for attaching them with the body section of your rocket. After that, insert the rocket engine in rocket’s bottom section. A nose cone should be placed at the top of the rocket. Now, your rocket is ready for launch.

Model Rocket Engines: Their Functionality

For propelling forward, a fuel grain is used by almost all the model rocket engines. When the grain of the rocket engine touches the igniter, flames begins to emerge. This flame generates the energy, which helps a model rocket to fly. Gradually, the surface area begins to burn and it gradually increases towards the rocket engine casing. The rate of burning and thrust increases simultaneously, as the area of burning surface increases. The rate of thrust and burn reaches the extreme point when fuel of the rocket remains inside the diameter of rocket engine casing. Some rocket engines have spikes at the initial stage if they have end burning configuration. This configuration comes in handy when a rocket takes off from to ground and tries to speed up. Until the fuel of a model rocket engine is exhausted, burn area lowers into a lower thrust level.

The functionality of model rocket engine is a complex procedure. However, you can still enjoy rocketry without having a fair knowledge of it. You just need to have the passion and nothing else and you will experience that you are flying rocket and enjoying the blithe of freedom.

How Does a Model Rocket Engine Work?

It were Robert and Orville Carlisle, who first invented model rocket engines. Since then, it has been attracting the attention of millions of people worldwide who like to choose something unique as their hobby. Rocketry as a hobby has always been appreciated and eulogized because it gives a sense of liberty from this mundane world even for a brief period of time. Though small rockets are designed by scientists for testing purpose, model rockets are completely different from them as the parts and the functionality of a model rocket engine is not as complicated as that of a rocket engine that has been developed for scientific purpose. Furthermore, you will not have to be a pro or a techie for flying a model rocket because these types of model rockets are created and developed for the soul purpose of amusement and nothing else.

Do not assume that rocketry is a costly affair because numerous companies are now offering model rocket engines at an affordable rate. A model rocket usually have these following parts: clay end cap, ceramic nozzle, casing, propellants etc. Propellant helps your model rocket to take off from the ground. The capacity of your engine is more and less depends on the power of the propellants. However, there are other issues that are closely associated with it.
